Background

International Youth Day, observed annually on 12 August, is an opportunity to recognise the contributions of young people and mobilise them as agents of change. In 2025, Zango Foundation used the occasion to lead one of its most impactful environmental and civic engagement campaigns of the year.

The Campaign

In partnership with VIONET Zambia and Habitat for Humanity Zambia, Zango mobilised a team of youth volunteers for a day of community action. The campaign had two components: a fruit tree planting drive and a community cleanup of public spaces in the target area.

Fruit trees were chosen deliberately — they provide not only environmental benefits such as carbon sequestration and soil stabilisation, but also long-term food security for community members. Each tree planted represents a tangible, lasting contribution to the community's future.

Impact

  • Hundreds of fruit trees planted across community sites in Lusaka
  • Significant community spaces cleaned and restored
  • Youth volunteers gained hands-on experience in environmental stewardship and civic action
  • Partnership with VIONET Zambia and Habitat for Humanity Zambia strengthened

Youth as Agents of Change

This campaign is a demonstration of Zango's core belief: that youth are not passive recipients of development — they are its drivers. By placing young people at the centre of environmental action and community service, we build the leaders that Zambia's communities need for the future.
